Description
Doria Eolipyle, or self-acting paint burner/blowtorch/lampe souder, No. 2, Copper Stand – Although unmarked, the cutout pattern, what I call “Star and Tulips”, is diagnostic of manufacture by Doria, a company in business at least as early as 1879 and in 1885 located at 1 Rue de Turenne in Paris, France.Interestingly, Doria Eolipyles were imported and marketed in the US by The Electrical Supply Company of Chicago (1892 Catalog).
T
hese are quite early torches, pre-dating most of our “typical” North American and European blowtorches. They are distinguished principally by their ventilation cutout pattern, by their size, and by the metallic composition (copper or iron) of their body cylinder. All are composed of three parts; a lower alcohol lamp, a supporting body cylinder with attached handles, and an upper alcohol reservoir with an underlying burner tube.
This little Eolipyle is marked on the front of its stand with its size “2”, being about 2 3/4 inches (about 70 mm) in diameter and about 5 1/2 inches (about 140 mm) in height. The stand, alcohol lamp, and upper fuel chamber are made of copper, while the two collapsible handles and the handle support is made of iron. The pull and wick holder on the lower lamp, and the combined fuel cap/pressure-release mechanism on the fuel chamber are made of brass.
As you can see from the photographs, this Eolipyle is in wonderful condition. I see a tiny “ding” on the right rear part of the fuel tank and the left side of the front opening looks as though it has been cut. Typical examples of these Eolipyles are shown on pages 288-289 in the book
