    The story of the old New York & Harlem Railroad began way back in 1831 when New York City authorized construction of a horse-drawn streetcar system for Manhattan Island that evolved over the decades into a major commuter railroad connecting New York State's upstate communities with the New York City.
    This new book is not a dedicated narrative of the
    New York Central's Harlem Division
    , but rather a photographic look at the history of this railroad that was the driving force in developing the regions along the eastern border of New York State from New York City to the heart of the Berkshire Mountains of western Massachusetts.
    Several noted photographers and railroad historians have opened their collections and have provided nearly 600 photographs, maps and timetables, including 32 pages in color.

    between New York City and Chatham, New York.
    Author’s fondness for the
    New York Central
    has been shown in his previous books on the West Shore, Adirondack Division, and Ulster & Delaware. Here, Ham gives the reader a superb point-to-point portrayal of the heavy commuter portion to Brewster but then it continues up the single track mainline that meandered north through the bucolic countryside as part of a one-time planned interior route with the Rutland toward Montreal.
    Every station and town along the Harlem is depicted.
    For a number of years, trains from the Harlem continued over sister Boston & Albany's mainline to Pittsfield, thence north to North Adams,
    Massachusetts
    to a connection with the Boston & Maine's old Fitchburg Route mainline. The interchange between the Harlem, B&A, and Rutland's "corkscrew division" at Chatham receives extra attention.
    Finally, sections on the Rutland's milk trains, the B&A's Hudson Branch, and the parallel Putnam Division are included.
