DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
Judged on the basis of the quantity produced, the Mallet may well be acclaimed as the most successful of all articulated steam locomotives. Compared with less than two thousand Garratts-technically the superior engine-there were more than five thousand Mallets, of which over three thousand ran in the United States of America. This extensive adoption of what was initially a French device resulted in the Mallet developing to sizes and powers undreamt of when the first 0-4-4-0T was steamed in 1888, and from 1904 until 1960 th6i world's largest and most powerful steam locomotives were invariably of the Mallet form.
In this book, the first two chapters trace the origins of the Mallet and describe its technical developments. Included among the latter were some truly bizarre diversions from the main stream of development, although culminating in the superb non-compound version whose off-beat unsynchronised exhaust, like the Garratt, belied its operating effectiveness.
The remaining six chapters deal with the Mallet's distribution throughout the world, all continents except Australasia having had fair quantities of this type of locomotive.
The book is illustrated by over one hundred photographs and twenty-four line drawings.
