Moreover, the road served a useful purpose by making available the resources of an area that might otherwise have remained cut off from the rest of the country for years to come...the engineering, economic and political problems involved in planning, building and operating a short-line railroad during the most fiercely competitive period of California history."  The book is well illustrated with photographs, maps or line drawings on most pages.  The pictures above show the
